JC Penney’s Portraits

November 16, 2010

Isaac and I went into JC Penney’s last week to get some portraits done, just for fun.  A friend of ours in Seattle got some really cute pictures of their 13 month old there, and we knew the actual photo shoot was free (you just pay if you want to order prints) so we decided to check it out. I was also interested to see what types of techniques they’d use to distract Isaac and get him to smile.

Overall it was a huge disappointment.   The only toy they had to attract small childrens’ attention was a plain old ball.  Like…BORING!  Isaac couldn’t have cared less about the stupid ball.  Then, the photographer kept saying over and over, in a chirpy voice, “Where’s Isaac?! Where’s Isaac?!”  I mean, she was putting some effort into it…but it wasn’t working at all.  We got lots of pictures with a kind of puzzled/scared look on Isaac’s face.

The session seemed super rushed, especially considering we were there in the middle of the afternoon on a Wednesday and the place was completely deserted!  They only took 8-10 pictures total.

Here are the two best pictures we got.  We don’t like them enough to pay $20 each to order 8x10s, so I’m just showing you are the tiny-sized screenshots from the JCPenney’s website.   Better luck next time.

Isaac always looks cute, but Sarah you can take way better pictures than JC Penny!

Thanks Andrea! I was so optimistic that I was going to learn some new tricks and maybe get some cute photos from a professional…but no dice! Maybe some JC Penney’s have decent photographers and some are terrible?

When I did that with Emma they kept sweeping a feather on a stick at her face, she would swat it away and scowl, as Lane tried to keep a smile plastered on his face. She was 1, Lane was 3 1/2. Not good shots. The pictures you take of Isaac are so adorable.

HA! a feather?! That reminds me of a cat show I went to once (don’t ask) where they were waving feathers in the cats’ faces to show off their spunky & playful temperaments. It was soooo ridiculous and everyone was taking it sooo seriously. hilarious!

You getting tips from the JC Penny photographer is like Babe Ruth getting batting tips from a Little League coach. JC Penny, meet Sarah, Pulitzer Prize potential photographer and photojournalist extraordinaire!
