Cyclo-Cross Practice

September 29, 2010

Jamie and Stephen have discovered a new sport – cyclo cross.  Here’s what it is: a bike race around a closed course on dirt tracks, steep hills, sand pits, through mud puddles, and over obstacles like tree trunks.

When you’re faced with an obstacle, such as two buckets with a two by four laid across them (…ok actually this one was for an embarrassing set up we did to practice in the park)

You must hop off your bike as quickly as possible…

Pick it up, and leap over the obstacle

…like a mountain goat!

Then you must get back on your bike

and take off again as quickly as possible, because this is a race!

Hurry, hurry!

Continue on the course, try not to let anyone lap you, try not to crash, and try to finish the race without puking.  That’s what these Welles do for fun!

Their first race was this weekend.  Isaac and I watched.  This is a very fun spectator sport because it’s a relatively small course so you can see a lot of what is going on.  There is also usually a rowdy crowd, cheering and ringing cow bells!  And sometimes you get to see exciting crashes.  They also sell Belgian Waffles.

I didn’t get any pictures of my own at the race, but here are two pulled from the race photography website.

The Golden Gopher brothers!

Jamie finished the race without puking, which he considered an accomplishment.  Stephen had a minor crash at the beginning of the race and somehow completely destroyed his bike, so he hung out with Isaac and I for the rest of the race.   We look forward to attending many more ‘cross meets!

That sounds AWESOME! I really want to do it too, and so I am definitely visiting in the spring so I can join in.

Yes, it is so fun! I would give it a try if you raced with me – how fun. I would probably have to wear full body armor to prevent any more bone breaks though… 🙂

Sarah, our parallel lives never cease. Terry just built a cycle cross bike and hopes to race this fall. Plus his brothers both race.
So since we just bought a house I am positive you guys will be as well soon =)
