Colic! Blood Diapers! Lots of Crying!

November 16, 2009

Isaac has amped up his fussiness over the past few weeks to unheard of new heights!  He started sleeping less at night with longer bouts of crying before he would go back to sleep after eating.  He started crying for blocks of time in the evenings like a true colicky baby.  And during the days he has  been either asleep or acting like he’s in some sort of gastrointestinal distress, which makes him cry some more.  Poor baby.

In order to deal with all this crying, I cycle through the baby tools of distraction at my disposal.  Here are a few examples.

Bouncing on the red rubber ball.  The more vigorously the better.

Baby Bjorn, facing outward.  Sometimes he likes to look around at everything…and sometimes he HATES IT! See?

How much fun do I look like I’m having? 🙂

Swinging.  That is a towel around his head to help keep it upright.  He will sometimes accept the swing as a substitute for being carried/bounced around the house:

When he finally falls asleep he is very cute.  Aunty Jane – here’s the blanket you made for us! So cute, we love it!

Isaac is getting really good at holding his head upright – he especially likes to do this when he’s laying on our shoulders being burped.  You can sort of see his strong little neck in action in this picture from Halloween.

At the beginning of November we noticed that he started to have some bloody mucus spots in his diapers.  At first it was really minimal – like a few tiny specks – so we ignored it.  But then after a few days it became more persistent so we decided to go visit the Dr.  The Dr suggested that it might be an intolerance to protein from cow’s milk, so I’ve stopped eating dairy.  We think it’s improved his grunting/straining/crying after eating a little bit so far, and the blood in his diapers is definitely getting better, so our fingers are crossed that this will be the solution.

Today Isaac is 6 weeks old.  The exciting thing about this age is that it’s the peak of colic for most babies.  We really really hope that the crying, screaming, and acting like he’s in pain after eating is all downhill from here!

We have an exciting roster for visitors lined up for the next week.  Aunt Susan arrives tomorrow and stays till Thursday.  Jamie’s parents get here on Friday and stay for the weekend.  Then my dad gets here next Tuesday night for Thanksgiving, followed by my brothers on Wednesday.  We’re so excited to see everyone!!

Try taking baby to the cyropractor and/or a homeopathic doctor. Might help.

Sounds like a house full of fun. I am looking forward to seeing you, Isaac, James, James and John. We have much to celebrate: Isaac, seeing you guys, James birthday, Thanksgiving. Let’s cook a turkey! Plus, I have an exciting new book to share. Oh, and we have lots of computer programming to do. Has Isaac learned coding yet?
